SARUM COLLEGE
ART, BELIEF AND SPIRITUALITY

6pm Monday 2nd - 5pm Thursday 5th February 2009

'How far' John Ruskin once asked his readers 'has Fine art, in all or any ages of the world, been conducive to the religious life ?'

This course tries to answer his question, both with reference to the relationship between Christian art and spirituality in the past (for example in the Early Church, the Gothic and the Renaissance) and also in the so-called 'Post-Christian' present.

Its broader aim is to help students (from any religious tradition - or none!) to understand, experience, and share the links between 'seeing' and 'believing' not only in their own culture, past and present, but also, hopefully, in their own lives.

The tutors are drawn from several disciplines - art history, visual art, theology, liturgy, and the social sciences - and the course will also include a study visit to Salisbury Cathedral and a practical workshop.

Emeritus Fellow of Trinity Hall,
