A little over a year ago we established a regular Prayer Station in our town. At 10 o'clock, every Saturday morning,we set up our gazebo, on the pavement, outside the GPO Sorting Office, opposite Sainsbury's Supermarket. A banner is strung from the gazebo to the nearest tree, chairs set out and a team of four people are there as a Christian presence and witness.
We work on a rota system, with volunteers from our town churches. We have been there in sunshine and rain (only missing once through ice and snow, and on Christmas Day and New Year's Day). We have come out from our church buildings to the middle of townwhere the people are.We seek to reach out to people who might not come to church, to engage with them, to be there as a friendly presence, ready to listen and to talk with passers-by. We work in pairs, following guidelines, ready to pray with them if they wish us to do so. Many people stop to speak to us. Having established our presence there, people are aware of us and know where to come should the need arise. We have prayed with a great many people over the past year. Some, hesitant at first, have returned again and again. Prayers have been answered. We have been blessed and energised in this work. It is a joy to be part of this team. We have made new friends with folk from different churches. Weather permitting we are there from 10 o'clock until 1p.m.each week.
If you are in Devizes on a Saturday morning, do come and say hello!
