Deacon David reflects on 2011 pilgrimage to Lourdes
David is director of the annual Clifton diocesan pilgrimage.
At Lourdes the pilgrims attended a reception on the Saturday morning, a chance for coach, train and air travellers to come together. In the afternoon we attended the Gathering Mass held in St Bernadette's Church, opposite the Grotto.
Each day in Lourdes, there is a Blessed Sacrament procession at which the sick are blessed and in the evening there is the torchlight procession, where pilgrims come together to recite the Rosary and sing Marian hymns.
We joined pilgrims from around the world in the Basilica of St Pius X on the Sunday morning for the International Mass.
In the afternoon, pilgrims gathered in the St Pius X Basilica for the Blessed Sacrament procession.
On the Monday morning, pilgrims gathered at the Crowned Virgin, ready to process to the Grotto for Mass. This is always one of the highlights of the week in Lourdes, because it was here, that the Blessed Virgin appeared to Bernadette for the first time on 11 February 1858.
In the afternoon, there was the opportunity for pilgrims to attend the Penitential Service, where bishops and priests heard confessions.
On Tuesday Pilgrims visited the farmhouse where Bernadette spent time as an infant and later as a shepherdess and then into a local restaurant for lunch.
Bishop Declan led the pilgrims in prayer around the Stations of the Cross in the early afternoon of Wednesday. Early rain didn't deter pilgrims with a good number braving the elements and the steep hill. On Thursday morning, pilgrims assembled in the underground Basilica of St Pius X for the Mass of anointing of the sick, a truly moving Mass at which pilgrims from our dioese were anointed.
After our Service of Thanksgiving in the afternoon, led by Bishop Crispian Hollis of Portsmouth those travelling back home by road, boarded the coach for the return journey to our diocese and on this leg of the journey, we were joined by Bishop Declan.
The 2012 pilgrimage takes place between the Friday 24 and Friday 31 August. Deacon David Wakefield
